Hathersage Hall Business Centre shortlisted for RIBA award

Hathersage Hall Business Centre (the new £3.5m Grade II listed rural office development in the Hope Valley) has been shortlisted for a prestigious architecture award following the skilful and sensitive conversion of a range of semi-derelict listed buildings, which originally formed the coach house, dovecote and stables to Hathersage Hall.

The RIBA EM Awards are awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects East Midlands to recognise excellence in architecture within the East Midlands region. Hathersage Hall Business Centre is one of eleven developments across the region to be shortlisted for this year’s awards, the winners of which will be announced at a presentation ceremony in Leicester on 30th September.

“Development of the early 19th Century range of buildings has been 25 years in gestation, needing no less than three individual applications, detailed negotiations with planners and conservation architects, the regional development agency and Natural England and careful co-ordination between all parties before a workable solution could be devised” says Michael Shuttleworth, Estate Manager.

The completed scheme has already received wide acclaim for its sensitive treatment of these listed buildings, which retain many original architectural features including detailed stonework and exposed roof trusses while at the same time achieving an impressive Category B energy performance rating and supporting the sustainability agenda with air source heat pumps for under floor heating.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Peak District National Park, buildings that were built for horses and hay in the early 19th Century have been converted to meet the 21st Century needs of high quality knowledge-based businesses, whilst ensuring a low carbon footprint and high speed broadband capability.

The older buildings have been complemented by the addition of two contrasting, modern designs which together offer a variety of office layouts and provide a useful new resource for Hathersage, its environment and the local economy.

Hathersage Hall Business Centre is also currently running as a finalist in the Derbyshire Times Business Awards 2010 (Most Innovative Property/Building Development category) and has been cited by the CLA as a lead case study in The Rural Challenge Report.

About Hathersage Hall Business Centre:

Hathersage Hall Business Centre is a family-run enterprise, forming part of the Shuttleworth family estate.

Supported by an EMDA grant from the Derbyshire Economic Partnership, Hathersage Hall Business Centre has been built on one of the few designated employment sites in the Hope Valley.

Situated within the conservation area of the village, Hathersage Hall Business Centre is widely regarded as a landmark project in the restoration and conversion of old agricultural buildings into new use - it comprises six properties with historic provenance, including stables, a coach house, a piggery, old laundry and a brick-built dovecote, complemented by two attractively finished new-builds.

Hathersage is 56 minutes from Manchester by train, 20 minutes from Sheffield by train or car.

"With offices up to 12 500 sq foot and the highest ICT and environmental specification, these are eye-catching offices that will make great working environments and places to impress clients" (Jim Dixon, Chief Executive of the Peak District National Park Authority).

"Hathersage Hall Business Centre is a unique development for the Peak District and shows the versatile options for the redevelopment of period buildings, to both generate business for rural Derbyshire and to maintain its delicate architectural heritage" (Peregrine Cavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire).
