The Background

The development of Hathersage Hall Business Centre, marks the latest phase in the life of the range of original farm buildings dating back to the 18th Century.

Hall Farm in the 18th century

Remodelled in the 1840’s, they were redesigned and improved to form the domestic outbuildings to Hathersage Hall, including coach house, stables, hay barn and a dovecote. Then, in the early 20th century they were returned to primarily agricultural use, housing a small dairy unit and stock rearing pens which became increasingly uneconomic in the 1970’s as farming practice changed.

By the 1980’s these historic stone buildings were very run down. With a Grade II listing and a heavy maintenance obligation, the Shuttleworth Estate set about realising its vision of redeveloping the site to bring opportunity and new economic life to Hathersage:

“The philosophy behind this project was to use the space for commerce rather than tourism, allowing for sustainable business growth and better job opportunities in a traditional rural setting, yet preserving the beautiful architecture that gives the region its character”

After much negotiation, consultation, numerous planning applications and several redesigns, construction eventually started in April 2008 leading to a transformation into premium quality business premises which is now complete.

The realisation of this project represents the very best practice in rural regeneration and is considered to be a suitable blue-print for repetition elsewhere in the UK.
